#Road2Reading Challenge: The Good For Nothing Button

June 13, 2017 Alyson Beecher

The Good For Nothing Button (Elephant & Piggie Like Reading!)
by Mo Willems, Charise Mericle Harper
Disney-Hyperion (May 2, 2017)
Fiction * Animals * Birds
Audience: 4 to 7 year olds
IndieBound | WorldCat

Description from GoodReads:
Yellow Bird has a button. It does . . . nothing! It is a good for nothing button. Red Bird and Blue Bird are excited to try the button. But when they press it, they discover that the button makes them happy. Happy is something! A flabbergasted Yellow Bird insists the button does nothing. But it sure does seem to be making him mad. Mad is something!

The hilarious debate that follows takes readers on an emotional roller coaster that pokes at the power of imaginative play.

Quick thoughts on the series:
In May 2016, readers said good-bye to Elephant and Piggie and their last book, The Thank You Book.  Mo Willems talks about the end of the series and the start to a new spin-off in a Washington Post interview in 2016. In the interview, he introduced the Elephant & Piggie Like Reading series.

First came We Are Growing! by Laurie Keller and then The Cookie Fiasco by Dan Santat, both created in conjunction with Mo Willems.

The latest in the series is The Good For Nothing Button by Charise Mericle Harper.

Harper has created a story around a button that doesn't actually do anything but throughout the story provides readers with a humorous vehicle to talk about emotions.

And in similar style to Willems' Elephant & Piggie books, The Good For Nothing Button puts dialogue bubbles to use as a way of telling the story. Beginning readers are going to really love this latest book.
