Who was the most difficult character (from one of your books) for you to write and why? 

Because the Dreaming Anastasia series is written from multiple points of view, each character has his/her own challenges. I don’t think one has been consistently more difficult, but certain situations are more problematic for certain characters. If I’m writing a romance scene, for example, I will tend to do this through Anne’s point of view for a number of reasons. First of all, I’m more comfortable writing romance through a female perspective. Second, the details that Anne notices and the way she describes moments of romance, lust, etc. are probably more appealing to my readers, who by and large are also female.

Plus honestly, Ethan is from a different time and place. He is by nature not as forthcoming about his emotions, although certainly he has them. So while he does let the reader how he feels about Anne, he does not generally do so with as much, um, zest as Anne does. Actually, book 3 will let you see more of Ethan’s passionate side. I’m really excited about that!

Who was the person or writer who inspired you to write and what was it that was inspiring? 

Libba Bray’s use of 1st person and her blend of angst and humor and action in her Great and Terrible Beauty series really informed my sense of YA genre fiction. There are many, many others, but her work comes to mind first.

What is the one book that you wish you had written and why? 

She always gets shy and modest when I praise her work, but I truly wish I’d written my friend Lauren Strasnick’s Nothing Like You. It is an amazingly crafted work and Lauren teaches me so much about spare prose. We joke that what she can say in 20,000 words I can say in 80,000. That’s a bit of hyperbole, but I am always in awe of her and how she tells so much in so few words.

When authors create a world for a series there are rules they need to stick with for consistency, are there things you would change in your book world that you didn’t foresee being an issue initially? 

I think for the Dreaming Anastasia series, the most daunting issue has been balancing the wide variety of Russian fairy tales and fairy tale characters who work as the motor of the story and weaving them in with (somewhat altered) historical fiction elements concerning the Romanovs. I have Baba Yaga, Vasilisa the Brave, the story of rusalka and in the third book, the story of Koschei the Deathless. Plus lacquer boxes and Faberge eggs and two ballets (Swan Lake and in book three, Giselle, and the running conceit of the forest. And my ongoing homage to all things Buffy… I guess that’s a lot. And when I initially conceived of this series, it had no Russian fairy tale element to ground the magic. So yeah, I’d say that was all a challenge.

What is your most embarrassing/funny/scary Halloween experience or costume? 

My parents were nuts about Halloween. My sister and I never had to worry about buying a costume on time – my Mom had them picked out almost a year in advance. Mostly out of necessity, because they were usually hand made. Not in the “sew-you-a-ragdoll” kind of way. My stepdad loves gadgets and is one of the most creative people I know. I don’t think I appreciated it at the time, but when I look back now, I realize my E.T. costume, complete with home-made glowing finger was actually pretty cool.

Most embarrassing? Oy. That was just last year when my 6’5” husband insisted we go to a Halloween party -- with him as the Jolly Green Giant, and me his brussel sprout.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer and what did you first write about?

Grade 6. My teacher’s name was Mrs. Kratky, but we called her Mrs. Crabby, because she was. Good marks were tough to come by in her class, and I still shudder whenever someone uses a red pen – it was like she was drawing blood every time she marked up one of my assignments. Mid way through the year, we were asked to write a short story. As she handed them back, I watched my classmates’ faces pale, and listened as she commented about things students had done wrong. By the time she finally gave me my story, I’d almost hyperventilated. On the back of my story, she’d written in red pen: Please see me after class. I’ve invited your parents. Scariest. Words. Ever. But when my parents came in, Mrs. Kratky didn’t tell them how horrible my writing was or tsk the inappropriateness of my story – she said I had a talent, and they should encourage it. I still believe if that teacher hadn’t called in my parents, I’d still be fumbling for “what I want to be when I grow up.”

If you could spend the afternoon with a favorite fictional character, who would it be and what would you do? 

I have to pick one? Yikes! I’m going to go with Alice, from Alice in Wonderland. And of course, I’d simply love to follow her down the rabbit hole. What an adventure!

What was your favorite book as a child that you have re-read as an adult? Did it hold the same magic for you as an adult as it did for when you were a child? 

I actually have a handful of those favorites, but the three key are: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, and the Princess Bride, which may not be considered a children’s book. Ironically, I also love the movie adaptations of those amazing novels. (I also have great admiration for Johnny Depp who coincidentally is in two of the above mentioned movie adaptations.) I’m never afraid to re-read a book – and I do so frequently. Sometimes it’s to get re-lost in the world the author has created, and sometimes it’s to absorb some of the writer’s talent.

What is your most embarrassing/funny/scary Halloween experience or costume? 

I’ve been dressing up as a witch for the last few years. Mainly, because I found a really cool witch hat. I’m still waiting for the hat to work its magic and grant me an unforgettable Halloween.

What was the most surprising thing that you discovered about one of your characters that you didn’t see coming? 

Hum, without giving away too much…Book two, Furry & Freaked, really changed a lot of things for me. Not only did my storytelling improve but, Kasey grew up a lot because of what had happened to her in book one. I had to make some changes to the “people” that surrounded Kasey. It really had to happen to create the hero Kasey needed to have in her life.

When authors create a world for a series there are rules they need to stick with for consistency, are there things you would change in your book world that you didn’t foresee being an issue initially? 

Maybe the blogging. I don’t use it much in book two. It fit book one.

List your top 3 fictional crushes and why do they make the list? 

Eric, from the Sookie Stackhouse series, ‘cause he’s tall, blond and a vampire Viking! Plus there’s a good guy under all that power. Dean Winchester, from Supernatural, I love his humor and his car and that he is always there for his little brother, Sam. Jamie Frasier, from the Outlander series, he’s Scottish and a protector and loves Claire beyond anything of this realm.

When authors create a world for a series there are rules they need to stick with for consistency, are there things you would change in your book world that you didn’t foresee being an issue initially?

Wigs. My Goth Girl Thorn is getting her own book in March titled BURIED. When she was first introduced, I put in a line about her being allergic to hair dye to explain why she wore wigs. I wanted her to take off a wig and show her blond hair, which couldn’t happen with dyed hair. So I gave her that allergy. And now that she has a book of her own, she’s stuck wearing wigs. Poor Thorn.

Who was the most difficult character (from one of your books) for you to write and why?

When I first started writing the spin-off with Thorn, her edgy attitude was harder to write than Sabine who starred in the first 6 SEER books. I had to rewrite that first chapter over and over, until I started to learn Thorn’s voice. And I’m really proud how it turned out.

If you could spend the afternoon with your favorite author, who would it be and what would you do? 

Probably J.K. Rowling. Love her books. Of course, if she’s busy (ha!) I’d love to hang out with Ingrid Law who wrote the Savvy books. When I met her at a writer conference, I thought this was someone who would make a really fun girlfriend. Also I admire Suzanne Collins, author of Hunger Games, and would love to talk with her.

Was there a book as a child that you read which inspired you to be a writer and what book was it? Or What were your favorite books to read as a child? 

When I was young, my favorite author was Margaret Sutton who wrote the Judy Bolton mystery series from 1932-1967. I loved searching for her books in second hand stores. I got to meet her in person at my high school graduation party. That was cool – but not what I’d expected since she was over her books by then and not writing much anymore. So I really didn’t know how to talk to her, and let my mom do a lot of the talking. I continued to correspond with her and eventually co-wrote a Judy Bolton book with her which fans love to read.

Interview with Adam Jay Epstein & Andrew Jacobson, authors of The Familiars

In celebration of the release of The Familiars: Secrets of the Crown, authors Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson answer a few of questions by big fan, Zoe - age 9. 

What gave you the idea for writing The Familiars 1 & 2? 

Back in 2008, when we hatched the idea for The Familiars, it all started with Adam asking Andrew, “Do you know what a familiar is?” Andrew said he didn’t. Adam explained, “A familiar is the animal companion to a witch or wizard, like Hedwig in ‘Harry Potter.’” Andrew immediately took to the idea. We loved that familiars were always in the background, doing very little. What if we told a story where the familiars were front and center? And they were the ones going on the adventure. And Adam’s simple question quickly led to the creation of Vastia and all the magical animals inhabiting it. Our three main characters are an orphan alley cat named Aldwyn who is mistaken for being a young boy wizard’s familiar; Skylar, a know-it-all blue jay with the ability to cast magical illusions; and Gilbert, a bumbling tree frog who can see visions of the past, present, and future in puddles of water… sometimes. We didn’t have to look very far for our inspiration for Aldwyn. In fact, he was right in Adam’s backyard. There was a stray black-and-white alley cat named Ben, missing a chunk of his left ear, who visited there every day. The rest seemed to just flow effortlessly. The Familiars and The Familiars: Secrets of the Crown are targeted at middle readers, ages 8-12, but we really believe it will appeal to anyone who loves animals, magic, or fantasy. They take inspiration from “Harry Potter” and “Lord of the Rings” and hopefully put their own unique spin on the classic hero’s journey.

How do you guys communicate (when writing together)?

One of the unique things about The Familiars and its sequel is that we co-authored them. The two of us literally sat in the same room for months and months (we pretty much put in banker’s hours, 9-5 Monday through Friday) writing every word, sentence, and paragraph together. Andrew is the typist (because he’s frankly a much faster typer), while Adam sits beside him, or across from him in a nice, comfy chair, or sometimes paces around. After our initial conversation about the idea, we loosely outlined the first few chapters and just dove in. Then after writing about 45 pages, we meticulously plotted out the rest of the story. Of course we discovered many details along the way, but we had a basic sense of the major plot points and where the books would end. Neither one of us were English majors in college or had any book writing experience previously, but we’ve both read a lot, watched a lot, and lived inside our imaginations since we were little kids.

Where do you come up with all the names and mythical creatures?

Honestly we just make them up! We chose Aldwyn because it had an English flavor and we always imagined him as a little bit of an Artful Dodger/Oliver Twist type character. Skylar took inspiration from the prefix Sky which is of course what birds do. And Gilbert has the word Gil in his name, which frogs have! This is one of the most fun parts of our job. Especially all the fantastical creatures and places.

Did you always want to be authors?

Adam actually thought he might become a video game developer. He absolutely loves video games. Andrew's dad was a lawyer so he thought he'd be good at that. But he was also writing stories as early as in the second grade.

Which are your favorite characters?

Adam would say Gilbert because he has such a fun voice to write. Something unexpected always seems to come out of his mouth, even for us while writing it. Andrew loves Grimslade and his villainous ways!

How did you meet each other?

Adam grew up in Great Neck, New York, while Andrew spent his childhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but we actually met in a parking garage out in Los Angeles.  True story.

Interview with Pam Allyn, Author & Global Literacy Advocate

I want to take a moment to welcome Pam Allyn, Author and Global Literacy Advocate to Kid Lit Frenzy.  Pam took time from her busy schedule to tell us a little more about LitWorld and how we can promote literacy, too.  Thanks Pam for stopping by and sharing your passion with us.

Can you share with readers how you developed LitWorld and what was one or two things you have learned about Global Literacy that most surprised you?

I visited a school for HIV/AIDS orphans in Kenya to do teacher training work and saw most profoundly how much children themselves so believe in the power of education not only to change their lives but to save them. They are hungry to learn, so hungry. When I came back home, I started to think about how in this new era literacy is going to be the one way every child can open every door for his or her dreams and how we can best make that happen.

I stated LitWorld three years ago to campaign for this dream.  One of the most surprising things I've learned is that while I love schools, they cannot be the only solution. We have to cultivate all families and everyone in the community as literacy leaders too. I think there are going to be lots and lots of ways we can imagine to help all people learn to read and write, whether it's via a mobile phone or by a roving LitWorld Ambassador. Although school was designed to give kids a chance, around the world I too often see kids piling into schools but nothing much is happening there. We cannot rely on schools alone.  I want LitWorld to be about learning to read transformationally.

The other surprising thing I learned is that the numbers of illiterate people worldwide are staggering, even more so than I had ever imagined.  The official number is 774 million, which is huge to begin with, but I have traveled a great deal in these past three years and both here and everywhere I meet hundreds of people who may be able to decode the aplphabet but are still not reading anywhere near what it would take for them to use reading as a powerful force for change in their own lives.  The numbers are unacceptable.  We can change this problem, if we all join together and see this as the Human Rights issue of our time. 

What advice would you give to teachers and librarians who would like to develop joint community literacy initiatives or activities?

I love this; collaboration is the key in this new era.  The internet is powerful but can also be confusing.  Please visit us at Litworld.org and we can help you organize for joint community initiatives.  Our World Read Aloud Day is in its third year and we need your support for that one!

In a day and age of scripted Language Arts programs and high-stakes testing, some teachers and administrators are hesitant to branch out or deviate from what has been given to them. Yet, for many urban schools, improvement in reading scores are still slow. Where would you advise a teacher or school to begin in supplementing required reading programs in order to support children in developing personal reading habits at school and at home?

The main problem is that children are never given an opportunity to actually read and to build stamina, fluency and enjoyment. They are constantly asked to do activities and responses to reading, which does not improve stamina, probably the key and most underdiscussed aspect of a personal reading life. Teachers simply must give kids more time to read in school.  It's actually that simple, truly.  Even ten minutes a day of independent reading levels in books they really love, about topics that matter to them, is going to improve test scores, and best of all, give them the idea that having a reading life matters. 

With decreasing/disappearing funding for school libraries and librarians - and even public libraries - the classroom library is becoming even more essential. What suggestions or tips would you have for a teacher in creating a basic functional classroom library that can grow over time and address the diversity of his/her students?

Invite your students to help you build the library.  Ask them what motivates them as readers and build baskets, bins and on-line resources around those passions.  Also, I co-authored a book The Great Eight (Scholastic) that has tons of really cool photos of classroom libraries.  These should help in setting up your own!  I believe the classroom library is truly essential and should change over the course of the year to reflect our students as growing readers. Access to powerful texts that inspire us as readers and writers is so crucial.

Interview with Cheryl Rainfield, Author of Scars

About a month ago, Cheryl Rainfield agreed to do an interview for Kid Lit Frenzy,  In light of the Wall Street Journal Article, we decided that the interview needed to be posted today.  Thanks Cheryl for such a quick but thoughtful responses to my questions. 

What advice/suggestions would you give a teen who has a friend that is engaging in self-harm behavior? I know as a teen I wasn't certain what to do when I discovered that a friend was cutting. I stood by her but wish I could have done more.

I think the most important thing is to respond with compassion, and to let your friend know that they don't deserve to be hurt, even by themselves. It might not sound like a lot, but a compassionate, caring response can really go in there, and it helps encourage healing, instead of increasing the shame or blame. It can also help to ask them why they're doing it--and really listen to their response. If you were to create a list of 5 to 10 books a High School teacher should have in their classroom library, what would they be and why?

I want to list so many more, because there are so many books that make such a positive difference! But here are a few:

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, because it helps sexual abuse survivors know they're not alone, and it helps other readers understand, and maybe respond with a bit more compassion.

Crank by Ellen Hopkins, because it helps teens see on a deep level how doing drugs hurts and destroys you.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, because, through metaphor, it helps the reader understand how horrible violence and oppression is.

Breathing Underwater by Alex Flinn, because it comes from the perspective of an abusive boy, and it may help some readers who have those tendencies or who bully to come away with greater awareness of what their actions do.

Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt, because it inspires strength and protectiveness of others, and shows readers that there is hope in finding safety, love, and a home if they don't have that.

Peeling the Onion by Wendy Orr, because it can help teens grapple with overwhelming physical pain and the emotional effects, and show them that healing is possible.

When She Hollers by Cynthia Voigt, because it gives great hope and strength to anyone who's been sexually abused (that's at least 1 in 3 girls), and helps all readers see that we can fight back and protect ourselves, no matter what's happened to us.

Totally Joe by James Howe because it's a funny and endearing story about a gay boy, and teens need to see we can be ourselves and things can get better.

Jumpstart the World by Catherine Ryan Hyde because readers need to know that love is what matters, not whether you're attracted to someone who is male or female.

and, if it doesn't sound too bold of me, my own book Scars, because it has an insider view of self-harm which helps people who use self-harm know they're not alone, and other people who couldn't understand why someone would use it, to understand. And because it also reaches lesbian and gay youth, and incest survivors.

Teens don't often like to speak with adults about issues going on in their lives (trust issues, fear, etc.) - what advice would you give an adult in how to (1) recognize when there is a concern and (2) how to speak with a teen about that concern?

It depends on what the concern is. For self-harm, some warning signs may be wearing long sleeves and long pants even in the summer/heat; not wanting to wear revealing clothing; strong depression or despair; isolating themselves from others. For sexual abuse/incest, some signs may be: fear or uncomfortableness around men or sex, or the extreme opposite, throwing themselves towards it; strong negative body image issues; low self-esteem; strong guilt or self-blame; self-destructive behavior; being on high alert (such as jumping at sudden noises or touch); trying to hide their body; etc. There are many more possible signs....

I think for any hugely painful issue that a teen is dealing with, there will often be depression; retreating from others or the opposite, acting out; lack of self-confidence, and more.

One way to talk to a teen about an issue is to give them a good YA book on the subject (and read it yourself) and then talk to them about it. Ask what they thought and felt in response. I think a lot of dialgue can open up more easily over a book--over characters who are going through the issue, rather than the teen you are talking to. It can bring a kind of safety.

I know as an educator I have struggled in speaking with parents about big stuff kids are facing. I sometimes wonder will the parent believe me or will the child just get into trouble because I shared it (ignoring it isn't an option)? - Any thoughts about how to help parents who might be in denial?

Hm. First, I have to say--if anyone had spoken to my parents about the abuse I was going through, it would definitely have increased the abuse and torture I was experiencing at home, but I still would have been grateful. It would have been something I could hold on to, another voice telling me that what was happening to me wasn't okay, when everyone else around me was denying it and pretending not to see it, even though I tried to tell in so many ways.

I think it can help to open with how much you like the teen, and some things you appreciate, and then mention your concerns and how worried you are about the teen. Really listing all the signs and letting them stack up. It might help the parent be able to listen a bit more. Maybe giving the parent a book or an article might help as well? I'm not sure what else to suggest. Denial can be very strong in people.

SCARS is a complex book - addressing both issues of sexual abuse/incest and homosexuality. Did you ever wonder if you should just address one of those issues rather than both at the same time?

No--it made sense to me to cover all those issues (incest, being lesbian/gay, and self-harm) because many teens are dealing with all of those issues. I did, and I know others who have. And the incest is the root of the self-harm for Kendra, and for many people, so the two go together. Also, being queer was not an "issue" in the book--I wrote it from the perspective that it was just part of who Kendra was, and she was happy with it. I think it's so important to have LGBTQ books where their sexuality is not the issue, so that it's more normalized. It's another way to fight homophobia.

I know many people are talking about this lately - especially in light of the WSJ article - but why do you think books about important issues are so critical to teens?

I think books that deal with painful or hidden issues are so important for teens because many teens can't find someone safe to talk about what they're going through, but they can find out that they're not alone and that there is hope in a book. When you're in pain and you think you're the only one who thinks or reacts that way, it can make your pain worse, even unbearable. Teens go through so much that is hard, already--intense emotions, dealing with peer pressure and bullying.... When you load on any extra problems, and most teens have something, it gets hard to cope. Books can be incredible support.
