Summary of the book:
A strikingly illustrated, poetic look at the enigmatic life of the astounding and elusive giant squid.
The giant squid is one of the most elusive creatures in the world. As large as whales, they hide beyond reach deep within the sea, forcing scientists to piece together their story from those clues they leave behind.
An injured whale's ring-shaped scars indicate an encounter with a giant squid. A piece of beak broken off in the whale's belly; a flash of ink dispersed as a blinding defense to allow the squid to escape-- these fragments of proof were all we had . . . until a giant squid was finally filmed in its natural habitat only two years ago.
In this beautiful and clever nonfiction picture book about the giant squid, Candace Fleming and Eric Rohmann explore, both visually and poetically, this hidden creature's mysterious life.
Quick thoughts on the book:
From the time I was young, I loved the water and ocean. Some of my favorite things are to spend time walking along the waterfront or on a boat or in the water. Of course, when there is a new book featuring marine life, it goes on my "to read" list. And when that book is written by Candace Fleming and illustrated by Eric Rohmann, it is a must buy.
Fleming's newest picture book is a poetic love song to a giant squid. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of listening to Fleming and Rohmann talk about their creative process. It would be fascinating to hear them speak again but this time about GIANT SQUID.
Fleming's vivid verse is paired with Rohmann's gorgeous illustrations as you can see in these images above and below.
As I read GIANT SQUID, I was immediately drawn in and fascinated with the story that Fleming created around the mysterious giant squid. This will be a beautiful read aloud in a classroom as well as a mentor text for writing.
Look for a copy of GIANT SQUID at your local indie bookstore or community library. This is one book that you won't want to miss and students will enjoy pouring over again and again.
