The Sibert Award looks at books for "Children range from birth through age fourteen.” Last week, I shared the guidelines for the Sibert Award and for things to consider if you were to do a Mock Sibert. In the post, I shared six picture books to consider for the Mock Sibert. You can check out the post here. On Friday, November 30th, Melissa Stewart posted about the Sibert Smackdown and her book suggestions. You can check out her post here. I am looking forward to actually doing a Mock Sibert/Sibert Smackdown with students and sharing about their thoughts and reactions.
Picture books are great for reading through and comparing lots of books with a group of students However, since some years, the award skews older, I thought I would share some books for older readers. Here are some books that I would love to see get some recognition.
The Hyena Scientist (The Scientists in the Field) by Sy Montgomery, Photos by Nic Bishop (HMH Books for Young Readers, May 2018)
Boots on the Ground: America’s War in Vietnam by Elizabeth Partridge (Viking, April 2018)
Something Rotten: A Fresh Look at Road Kill by Heather L. Montgomery, Illustrated by Kevin O’Malley (Bloomsbury Children’s Books, October 2018)
They Lost Their Heads!: What Happened to Washington’s Teeth, Einstein’s Brain, and Other Famous Body Parts by Carlyn Beccia (Bloomsbury Children’s Books, April 2018)
What would be on your long-form list?
