Nonfiction Picture Book Challenge: What am I currently reading? - February 5, 2020

Post ALA Midwinter means diving into new releases from 2020. Though I haven’t been reading only nonfiction, here is what jumped out of the pile for nonfiction titles…

Dictionary for a Better World: Poems, Quotes, and Anecdotes from A to Z by Irene Latham, Charles Waters, Illustrated by Mehrdokht Amini (Carolrhoda Books, February 4, 2019) - This is such a beautiful book and I can’t wait to share it with teachers and students and to plan for ways to use it in the classroom.

A spread from Dictionary for a Better World.

On a Snow-Melting Day: Seeking Signs of Spring by Buffy Silverman (Millbrook, February 4, 2020) - A fun book with beautiful photos capturing winter transforming into spring and lovely rhyming text. A nice read aloud especially for young children.

A spread from On a Snow-Melting Day.

The Only Woman in the Photo: Frances Perkins & Her New Deal for America by Kathleen Krull, Illustrated by Alexandra Bye (Atheneum Books for Young Readers, February 4, 2020) - There are so many women who have made significant contributions to history and many we are just hearing about today. Frances Perkins was the first woman to serve on a President’s Cabinet and is credited for really being the person to create the New Deal during the depression.

One of my favorite images from The Only Woman in the Photo.

Flash and Gleam: Light in Our World by Sue Fliess, Illustrated by Khoa Le (Millbrook, March 3, 2020) - Though this may seem like a simple concept, I loved the vibrant choice of words and the beautiful illustrations in this book.

This spread captures for me some of the wonderful language used in Flash and Gleam.

Flight for Freedom: The Wetzel Family’s Daring Escape from East Germany (Berlin Wall History for Kids book) by Kristen Fulton, Illustrated by Torben Kuhlmann (Chronicle Books, March 3, 2020) - A powerful story about one family’s escape from East Germany to West Germany.

Amazing when you think about what this family did in Flight for Freedom.

Small Matters: The Hidden Power of the Unseen by Heather Ferranti Kinser (Millbrook Press, April 7, 2020) - I wish I had a spread to share from this book. The book is filled with so much wonderful information but also makes you think about perspective in new ways.

Love this layout for Small Matters.
